Where you plug into your motherboard does matter. a normal PCI slot in an older motherboard won't get you near USB 3.0 speed. If you don't have any PCI Express slots in your motherboard; then you won't get the throughput from the USB 3.0 card to the motherboard. -Tom Dragonetti

I'm saying this besides you have XP; so we don't know what hardware you are running. Assuming the USB card isn't competing with other cards, he'd still see a decent increase in speed if he had to use a PCI conventional slot. I believe they max out at 133 MB/sec for a 32 bit slot. Most hard drives aren't sustaining that much speed anyway. I recently tested a newer USB 3.0 drive and got around 70 MB/sec average throughput while connected to a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard. That is still a lot better than the 20-25MB/sec you usually see over USB 2.0.
