I dumped mine and got a 24L. Couldn't be happier.

It went back this morning. Will be getting another to try for this weekend

The issue was definitely not the thin DOF as my 85 1.2 doesn't give me the same problems

I will let you know how I get on

Very lucky to have a lot of nice toys :)

Because a 24mm lens is a great substitute for a 50mm lens?

Dont see how getting a 24L is relevant to this, its like selling the 70-200 to get a 8-15... Very different uses!

I also experienced crazy amounts of CA on the 50L...
Sample @ f/1.8:

I can certainly say that this is NOT an improvement, heck, it might as well be even worse in comparison to my 50 1.4...

Had another shoot later today, and the 50L sat in its bag the whole time. Cant afford getting home and having backfocused shots. Not getting this lens!

If you think that's bad you'll hate the 85L

Craziness! I bought the 50mm 1.2L last Wednesday from a local dealer in Pa (Fro Knows). Honestly, I wasn't expecting much of a wow factor since I have the 85 1.2L already. Holly *^%! this is a beast. I mounted the 50 on my MK IV and it was if some one had turned on the lights, nice and bright. Very impressive. I know it's limitations and potential. After viewing some of my sample shots in LR3, I was throughly impressed. Tack sharp and contrasty. It has not been unmounted from my Mk IV since Wednesday. I bought this lens to shoot at 1.2 through 2.0 and that all folks! Can't wait to pair it up with my backordered 5D MKIII.
After stalking the net reading countless reviews about this lens, I pulled the trigger. So far it's been been a great purchase.....no regrets.

If you see the same inconsistencies then it would be interesting to see what your MkIV does with it.

My own 50L is like a poorly trained dog on my 1DsIII but seems flawless on the MkIV's (with the exception of the focus shift).

I previously used a Lens Align for calibration and never managed to nail it down to a suitable value for MA on the 1DsIII. I've now run it through Reikan's Focal automatic system and it reports inconsistent result and a wide scatter of values. Using the same setup for the MkIV's produces good and consistent results (close to the ones I achieved with the Lens Align). In the past, I've used it on 5D, 5DMkII, 1DII, 1DIII and several APS-c bodies without being aware of any issues....just the 1DsIII that can't keep it to heel.

Get the Sigma 50. IF it has focusing issues, get it calibrated. I loved mine.

I bought the 50L when I only had the T3i. This lens was amazing on that camera! i was blown away but i find it a bit too long. Then i got the 5dii and the lens had all sorts of backfocus issues even thogh the FL was perfect. Long story short, it took me a while but once i found out how to use it and get consistent sharp photos (i use alservo) its always on my camera. I am very happy with it now.

I'd suggest reading Roger's take on the lens
http://www.lensrentals.com …al-range/canon-50mm-f1.2l (external link)

50mm wider aperture lenses- all seem to have their own quirks. Sometimes, it's nice to know what the quirks are beforehand and save the headaches.

Agree 100%.

I was all set to return my copy to B & H-could not micro adjust the lens. Even had an RMA number.

Then I took lens back out of box. I set MA back to 0. I worked with it-took many shots with it. Found out most of the problem was me. There is a learning curve. Still learning.

Lens renders beautiful images when I don't mess it up.

Just get two, then it's only off by 2mm.

My imagine composition sucks. I need a heavier lens.
