Apr 23, 2012 08:19 | #3 I haven't used extension tubes with the 100-400 for true macro. I have that combination for dragonflies and butterflies (for working distance) and also for frogs. It works well for those types of shots but not for true macro. 7D Mark II, 50D, 17-55 2.8 IS, 100-400L IS, 10-22, Sigma 150-600 C, Sigma 150 2.8 Macro, EF-S 60MM f2.8 Macro, EF-S 18-55 IS, 28-135 IS, EF-S 55-250 IS STM, 580 EX II, Yongnuo YN-24EX, JasonC007 Diffuser Kit, Gitzo GT2531EX, ARCA-SWISS Z1, RRS B2 AS II clamp, Kirk L-bracket for 7DII, Kirk L-bracket for 50D

The thing to be aware of is that zooming makes more difference to the focus distance than focusing does. It sounds odd, but it's true, because the effect of the extension is directly dependent on focal length. Therefore, as you zoom out to shorter focal lengths, the focusing distance comes inwards, so you get a closer shot at shorter focal lengths than you do at longer ones. This actually makes for a very versatile setup once you start to get the hang of it. Mark.
