Why aren't all/most buttons fully reprogrammable?

I have recently acquired the Canon 5D mark III as an upgrade from my 7D. So far, I'm very impressed. However I keep getting snagged by the image play and magnification buttons. I agree, the magnify button is on the wrong side of the screen so I'm using the set key to hit magnify. However, I really wish I could use the buttons on the upper right to zoom in an out without having to use the wheel, a la 7D. Canon gives us some ability to reprogram, but in some instances, there is one 2 choices total. Why do they do this?!?

I know I'll get used to it, but the Nikon has WAY too many buttons. It'll be simpler (for me anyways) to have a fewer buttons but be more customizable. Oh well.

Why do they do this?!?

Out of concern for the limited mental capacity of their customers. They don't want your poor little brain to overheat and become noisy.

Most likely this is not really far from truth. More options mean more problems with some/most users, so they rather not go there... in my opinion at least. Since technically I don't see problem adding few extra lines of code (and it really is just few) to make every single button be programmable.

This is something we love about Nikon, having recently purchased a D700. Lots of buttons can be made to do anything! However, we'd like even *more* customizability in some cases...
