I seem to be zoning in on bird portraiture....(and cormorants of one type or another).
Took these in very harsh light (but whilst that made exposing the whites damned difficult it did set off the water colour as backdrops nicely) out at a place called Ocean Reef in Perth, WA.

Had to climb out on the sea jetty to get the right light angles (so had to clamber over rocks with my kit). Interestingly, as I took photos I kept getting my photo taken by (I assume) tourists - suspect it was my lens they liked rather than me cutting a particularly dashing figure (which I accept I don't).

Hope you like.

Wow, these are beautiful. Do you have any shots of the whole bird? I would love to see that.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

Thanks Maureen!

Shots of the whole bird - yes, I do, I'll pop a couple in this thread being that you've asked for them in a min or two. :-)

Unfortunately for this bird, it had a load of fishing line wrapped around one of its wings which included a lead weight which hung down (you cannot see it here, but in other images I have it can clearly be seen). It did not appear to be in pain, however, and it still flew and swum with great aplomb. Still, very sad to see....

Thank Mark, appreciated.

As for the 5D3, if you get one and you spend a few hours with it and regret it, well, I'll take the blame and stand in the corner for a few hours. How about that?

Seriously though, it's a marvel, really is. Yes, the loss of reach compared with the 7D is tough, but, man, this camera is spectacular and the AF astounds me. Even swinging the lens round to get a bird in flight that you've just seen and you only have a split second invariably results in keepers. But, yes, for though subjects you can get closer to (even if it takes hours of waiting) this camera shines.

And, no, I don't get commission and, yes, I accept that even at 42 I'm sounding like a fanboy (hell, it had to happen one day I suppose, :-) )

Yes, I like!!!!! I like very much!!!! Wow, Andrew, these are so wonderful. The IQ of your images with the 5D3 continues to leave me breathless...

What you said to Mark about the AF reflects my own feelings about this camera and I just tested it out a bit during a Canon presentation last week. I have decided it will be my next camera. Hopefully later this year.

Thanks a lot. You'll love the 5D3 I'm sure, but sure to PM me when you post your first impressions of it, would love to know what you think.

If you can get a little closer in its well worth it, though not always easy it adds to the fun of 'stalking'your prey, so to speak.
