What would be a better choice for general photography. By that I mean, landscape, street scenes, some macro, night shooting, and some bird. Not a pro, but a more serious hobbyist. I like going out to shoot on weekends as a form of relaxation. Also looking to print up to 13x19. I have read some threads, but they get very technical and not sure how all that technical jargon relates to real world shooting.

I have seen many thread where the poster is persecuted for asking more basic questions or being a "troll" (whatever that is). So only looking for constructive and kind replies. Bashers need not reply. THanks.

Sounds like a win-win scenario. Personally, I would go with the 5D3 because it's full frame versus APS-H of the 1D4. New versus used is also a factor.

5D3 gives you the option to go with or without a battery grip which can be beneficial when you're using your camera for general shooting (sometimes it's easier to slap a small prime on w/o the grip and justify taking that combo vs. a full-sized pro camera with an integrated battery grip). Also, the full frame will let you get wider for landscape shots.

Image quality seems to be a wash based on reviews/comparisons posted so far. The 1D4 will also give you better weather sealing and a higher FPS rate (10 vs. 6) for shooting action. The AF of the 5D3 is amazing (better than my 1D3 but I can't speak first hand about the 1D4) so I don't think you'll be disappointed with either one on that front. Good luck with your decision.

I use and love the 1D IV but I'm a sports guy. For what you want to do, the 5D3 should be terrific.

The 5D3 sounds like it will do everything you need it to do.

5D3 all day. I sold my 1Div after buying a 5Diii. If you don't need the 1D build/grip or 10 FPS the 5Diii does everything the same and in some cases some things even better. The 1Div is a pretty awesome camera, don't get me wrong, I will have another 1 series at some point, just not a necessity for me at all.

5D3 would work well for what you describe. if it were me, I'd go with the 1DMKIV in a minute, even tho I don't like the way it fits my hands

If may ask,why would you choose the 1D MKIV over the 5D MKIII for the OP's purpose?
Thanks.
