Greetings,

I need some help selecting a flash for my XSI. I will be using it on and off camera. My budget is $200.00.

Which is a better flash?

I've read good things about both, but haven't used them. If you are using it on camera, definitely get something with ettl.

I owned both and currently using metz. metz 50 and di622 are not at the same level. di622 is comparable to canon 430exII while metz is comparable to the big brother - canon 580ex.

anyway, Here is the comparison that I know :
metz has more power compare to nissin.
metz has lcd display.
metz firmware can be updated via usb port. Not sure about nissin mark II. mark I you can't do this.
both has capability to use wireless mode (slave) to trigger flash emitted from master flash.
both has built in diffuser and catch card.

I've had the Nissin for my 60D and have no real complaints; the only thing I would change would be the plastic foot.

I just recently picked up 2 YN-565EXs and really like them. They compare quite favorably to the Nissin, and would function better off-camera in manual mode if that's something you're looking at in the future.

felixs- do you have the 58 AF-1 or the 50. The 50 is positioned much closer to the 430 in pricing and performance specs, so I was surprised by your analysis. See e.g., http://speedlights.net/speedlights-power-index/ (external link)

I have the Metz 50 and it is comparable to the 430 exii. I have been really happy with mine so far. Other advantages of the Metz over the Nissin in addition to the ones already mentioned are you can assign it to 2 different groups (group A or B) when shooting wireless, the 622 is always set to group A channel 1. The Nissin doesnt have manual zoom, the Metz does. Also, I dont think the Nissin has HSS and the Metz does.

this is a good summary. i can add that nissin has a mini-phone port and optical slave modes, which are not found on the Metz unit.

NJKEV, you may want to check out Canon 430EX II vs Nissin Di622 II comparison (external link)
