Does the Canon 7D have a "smart" battery that communicates with the charger like the 1D series or is it "dumb"? I'd like to get another battery and there's a good price difference between the Canon brand and a third party battery. Thanks.

Some of them don't have the onboard curcuitry to support all the functions of the OEM batteries. But somewhat better quality third party batteries pretty much do everything that the OEM ones do. Sterlingtek is one good source. I imagine the third party batteries from reputible online retailers such as B&H and Adorama are good, too. Alan Myers
