I've searched and searched and searched and found many different things.

Can someone just tell me if its worth using an extender on this lens? Or should I be saving up for the 2.8 and the extender on that?

I've even looked at the 120-300 Sigma... I just dont want to waste the money on the extender if it wont make a huge difference.

Also, I read that anything higher than 2.8 will lose the ability to AF. Is this correct?

Thanks chaps :)

I'm not as think as you confused I am..

You can use a 1.4x teleconverter on the lens giving you 280mm i think i roughly worked it out at. 2x teleconverter can be used but youll lose the ability to autofocus on most cameras.
Ive never used a 1.4 tx but have seen people use it with some pretty good results.

I used a Kenko 1.4X with good results on the IS verson of this lens. I have since upgraded to the 2.8 and the Canon extender. Oherwise, I would still be using it.

Anything higher than native 5.6 will lose AF unless you tape the pins, or some 3rd party TCs will allow the camera to focus anyway, but AF performance may suffer.

I use a 1.4x TC on my 70-200, and it does help, and IQ is just fine.

I was using the Kenko 1.4X PRO 300 extender.I found I could maintain autofocus as long as the light was good. I had no difficulty with my granddaugter's soccer games on Saturday morninings. Also maintained the IS function on the 70-200 f/4 IS lens.
