Need help/advice on buying a new camera

I am looking to buy a new camera, and I have specific needs. But I don't know anything about camera's and need some help. I am on a budget of about $800 to $1200, and wan't the best in that price range.

Me and my cousin want to start making video's. Short skits. And environment is critical. Meaning scenery is very important. I want a camera that can capture light very well, and in general colors. Also, we want the video's to look professional and not home made. I we want them to have a cinematic look.

that camera in that video is pretty good, but what else is out their that might be better for what I want? also before anyone bags on me, I know. you gotta know what your doing with the camera. I am well aware and once I buy it, I will do my research on how to use it. I just want to know what camera would suit me best? If you know of a camera other then Canon that would be good for this, pls write it.

Main focus: Great light and color capture. Possibly a nice cinematic look. I am new here, so go easy on me. And all feedback is appreciated. Thank you

Either a Canon T3i or Canon 60D will work well for you. Just buy the body and then a Canon 50mm f/1.8 like they used in the video you posted. You will also need a memory card as well. Either of those camera bodies and the 50mm lens will cost a lot less then the $1,200.00 you have to spend.

Hack it, and you can do some absolutely stunning things with it.

I own a Canon 5D Mk II, and if video was all I wanted a camera for, I would take a GH2 over my camera.

Panasonic GH2 is the best video choice in your price range.

Are you looking only for video, or do you want video in a still camera like what people have been recommending? If you are looking for video only, why not buy a good video cam.

you can do much better with a hacked GH2. You can use just about any lens, and the equipment you need to use it is far less.

If you want to mount those on a slider, the DSLR will allow you to use a smaller, less expensive one. Same with a tripod.

I have a good friend who is a pro video shooter, and he owns 10's of thousands of dollars in video equipment, and he shoots with a GH2. Mostly because of the available lenses.

However to the OP, his skills in post production are amazing. If you want to get cinema quality video out of any camera, there is a lot to learn. As much on the software side as there is in the field.

that was very helpful! thank you!! but also, is canon really the best for this type of work? i mean what about nikon. so far the nikon d5100 has been picked over a canon in many reviews. why is that? and also, I am a very big photography enthusiest. most likely I will get into photography as well. will the canon get the job done? im not worried about pixel quality as much as I want very good light capture

is that camera good for taking pictures as well? i'm very into photography, and light capture is more important then pixel quality for me.

It's good, but not as good as the Canons or Nikons. The Canon cameras in the same price range will take better photos. The Panasonic will take better video.
