I have read through all that I can find and my head hurts. To be quite honest I am more of a hands on when it comes to understanding some of this jargon.

What I am doing. I am looking for an on camera flash for my 20D to get over the shadowing of the larger barrel of my Sigma 10-22 3.5 and Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS.

Basically for general fill in and flash when needed. I have a Sunpak 4000AF that is no longer compatible to my 20D. I have it from my Elan 7E Film body.

So what I would like is something that will not blow out the subjects. I also want to be able to go remote possibly in the future if I get into doing other things that may require multiple flashes. So maybe a flash that could anchor multiple flashes.

The final need. Not sure I need to spend top dollar as I am a serious hobbyist and don't plan to turn it into making money doing so. The reason behind owning the two Sigmas lenses over the Canon. Budget and not wanting to spend top dollar for part time usage. I see good things about the 430EX II and the 580EX II and also the Sigma super 500 or whatever it is. Bottomline is getting very near if not the same or better results and not breaking the bank.

Should I stick to cannon or is there something that is comparable if not better? sorry to beat a dead horse but like I said I read allot of the threads and found some links that were posted but sometime you gotta lead a horse to water if you know what I am saying.

I would stick with the Canon 430ex or the 430ex II. I have heard lots of incompatibility issues and problems triggering off camera with the Sigmas.
As for blowing out the subject, all flashes will do that if you do not take the time to learn how they work.

That's what I was figuring with the compatibility. Plus if I ever pony up for a newer body like the 7D then at least I wont be out any equipment. Thanks for the reply dedsen.

I was lucky and picked up a used 430ex on this site a few months ago for $130 with little wear. Stick to a good used Canon flash and you can't go wrong.
