Would it be worth it to pick up a Canon 50mm f/ 1.8 II

Yes! It is definitely a great value lens to begin with.

If you never used prime before it is interesting prime to learn. Get used one under $100.
If you are interested in the prime which will serve you well in different situation and have better IQ compare to kit lens get Sigma 30 1.4.

Using a prime lens is a different sight compare with zooms,
I recommend you to get one to give it a try
