Been watching the Canon site for a refurbished 85mm. To my surprise, when I checked this evening, they actually had one in stock. Ordered it, can't wait to get it.

I'm really excited about this purchase. Next will be a 35mm f/2!

35 f/2 is a great buy from the refurb site. It went from being a lens that I could afford to "try" to being my most used lens, by far.

Grats on the 85.

I wanted to buy the 85 1.8 from Canon refurb'd page, but then I did a little bit of arithmetic:

The Canon refurb price is $336. Add $16 shipping and $21 tax in my state. Then I will need the front cap ($6), and maybe the rear cap (it only says that there is only the lens and the instruction book in the box). Total $379 min, and it includes only a 90 day warranty.

At the same time B&H sells an imported brand new version of the lens for $399 with one year warranty by the store. Is worth just $20 in savings? Or $419 US version, with Canon warranty. I decided it was not worth it.

Try the sale forum here - I recently sold my 85mm f/1.8 here, as well as a couple of other lens and Rebel T1i. Great people to do business with!

If the saving just $20,personally not prefer the refurbished one,
because you don't know the cause for the lens to be refurbished.
To be save and have 1 year warrenty, pick the new one

All Canon refurbs come in a plain white box with a lens tag to seal it, and yes, the lenses come with both caps. It's Canon, not KEH...you'll get the caps.

Also, the base refurb prices aren't that great, but Canon often does a 15 or 20% off on refurbs sale (as they did recently) which will make up for your added tax and shipping.

Well math doesn't lie, but then you have to figure the sales tax and shipping for the new US one at $419. So by the time you get done, I figure I saved $75 or so!

And yes I will be looking for a 35mm f/2 as well.

I will end up selling my Tamron 18-250mm, if I get $250 or so for it, I'll come out of the deal pretty well.

I was comparing with the "imported" version at $399 (1 year warranty by B&H vs. 3 months by Canon refurb), free shipping, and no tax - mail order from NYC. Ok, I agree on the lens cap, so it is not a $20 difference, but $26.

Whether you obtained the 85 1.8 refurbed, new or used I think you will truly enjoy using this lens. It's probably my favorite prime that I own.

I checked - a typical asking price here is about $350 (if you count the Paypal fees). Still, the savings is not worth it over the purchase of a new one from B&H or Adorama for $399. IMHO, of course.

I think I am already convinced. Of course, you guys here twisted my arms for that... :-) Yes, that's my plan.

Couple of things:

1. The lens caps come with the 85/1.8, but the hood doesn't just like with the brand new lenses.

2. Adorama sells refurbs too. The selection is not as good and they cost more, but they have a 1 year warranty and unless you live in NY, there is no sales tax or shipping costs so it actually costs less than from Canon direct.

3. 85/1.8 is in stock at Canon Direct right now:

I recently purchased a factory refurbished Canon 85mm F/1.8 from Adorama. It was Like $70 cheaper with a one year guarentee. So far it has worked perfectly. Like I read on another post, you know the lens has been completely gone over by a tech. and checked out. For $70 I will take my chances.

Recently I read that refurbished can actually be better. When items are produced they go through a random QC inspection. When an item is refurbished it goes through a QC inspection! So hopefully I end up happy!
