Hi all, I have just aquired a KENKO TELEPLUS MC7 C-AFI 2x TELECONVERTER from a fried for VERY VERY CHEAP hence why i didnt say no, however me being very new to DLSR's dont know where to get an adapter to mount it to my lens. it mounts right onto the T3i/600D on the little red circle but my kit lens has the white square and wont attach to the teleconverter.

Any ideas what mount adapter i need and where i can get it? i tried asking ebay to find one but i did not know what words to put in the search box as i am not up with the right wording for everything and have no mates with this same interest in photography!

Any help will be appreciated

What lens are you trying to use with it? It says "Not compatible with the Canon Digital-only EF-S lenses, e.g. 18-55 f/3.5-5.6, 17-85 f/4-5.6, 60 f/2.8 macro. So that means it will only work with Canon EF lenses.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I saw something once (can't find it now) that if you carefully compare the lens side of the teleconverter with the bayonet mount of the camera body you can see what needs to be modified. Obviously the two mounting surfaces should be identical for proper mounting to occur. As I recall one or more of the "ears" (for lack of a better term) on the teleconverter bayonet mount are too long. People have taken a Dremel and ground off the extra length of the ear. Obviously you have to very carefully tape up the teleconverter to avoid getting dust/debris into the converter that might migrate later into the camera body. I also think I remember that people were able to remove the bayonet from the teleconverter and do the grinding well removed and thus avoid the dust/debris issue.

Guess it wasn't as cheap as you thought? ;)

As far as I know, there is no halfway decent 2x teleconverter that is designed to work with EF-S lenses. And keep in mind also that your autofocus won't work with the converter on, even if you mange to make the necessary modification to allow the lens to mount. Not sure how it affects exposure settings.

I'm pretty certain there is no TC's with an EF-S mount. I've had a quick look at Tamron, Kenko, Canon and a general search on google but can't find any. A 2x converter would cost you 2 stops on your lens anyway meaning an f5.6 lens would be the equivalent of f11 and so would need to be manually focussed.
To use a 2x converter and retain autofocus you need to have a lens with f2.8 on all Canon bodies apart from the 1D series, which autofocus up to f8. The cheapest lens you will need to retain AF is a 50 f1.8 which obviously would only give you a 100mm FL. The cheapest EF zoom would be the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III, but you would lose AF and find the lens so slow it would be almost unuseable with the 2x converter.

Even if it fit, there is absolutely no point in using a a 2x TC with the kit lens. It would become an inferior quality, manual-only focusing, roughly f/7.1-f/11, 36-110 lens. I just don't see the point. If you want a longer lens, even the crappy and cheap 75-300 zooms would be better for US $100, or the underrated 70-210 f/4 , also for about 100 bucks.
I know it's a good feeling to find a decent TC for cheap but if you don't have a lens to attach it to, it's just paper weight.
i think the best second lens after the kit lens is the 55-250 IS, which in the US can be had for $150 (not sure about AU).
