Does this actually improve the image quality in any way? (colors etc.) or is a filter simply for protecting the front end of your glass?

Depends on what type of filter you're talking about. There's plenty of info out there on the different types of filters. CPL, UV, GND and ND are the most common. There's even a sticky at the top of this page entitled "THE FILTER FAQ". Give it a read.

Yep... CPL, ND, ETC. there is a bunch of threads on filters and whether certain ones (uv) do anything or not....cpl (circular polarizer) makes a big difference, as does ND ( Neutral density).
