Does this actually improve the image quality in any way? (colors etc.) or is a filter simply for protecting the front end of your glass?

CPL, UV, GND and ND are the most common. There's even a sticky at the top of this page entitled "THE FILTER FAQ". Give it a read. -Tom

CPL, ND, ETC. there is a bunch of threads on filters and whether certain ones (uv) do anything or not....cpl (circular polarizer) makes a big difference, as does ND ( Neutral density). A guy with a couple cameras, some lenses, and accoutrements
