I believe in the added protection and peace of mind from using UV filters. Do buy the best ones though to minimize any image quality degradation. Here's a great test of the difference between good multi-coated filters versus cheep ones.

My Canon L hit the floor without a UV filter, landing on the filter ring which thus bent, now that's a costly repair. I sometimes wonder if I would have had the UV filter on if the ring would have been ok. I'm sure the UV glass might have cracked but who cares, my filter ring may have not taken the brunt of the fall like it did the UV filter would have.

This is extreme I know...

If you had put the LENS HOOD on the lens, you probably would have had zero lens damage. A new lens hood would have been far cheaper than repairing the lens itself, and probably cheaper than a decent quality filter.

Yeah, me too. Good UV filters are the way to go. I personaly use 3 of them, stacked, because it's known that 1) they don't degrade image quality 2) offer protection from lots of things 3) ALSO protect from UVs (amazing!), and everyone knows UVs are bad, doctors say so, and if they say so for myself, it must apply to my lenses, right ?

That humour is so dry it's starting to absort moisture from the atmostphere

I am in "on and off" mode in this question. Sometimes I use a filter for protection, sometimes I don't.

To put it simply, for L glass, well. I paid for good IQ and to get away from the guesswork, if the situation is "non-threatening", I shoot without filter. However, as I do some sports shooting, let's say I am at the drinking station in marathon where a lot of splashing happens, yes I use a filter. Same thing while travelling, strolling streets of unkonown city and unknown situations, yes, I use a filter. However, if the situation is controlled, I am taking a landscape shot with a tripod for example, there's no way I would use a filter (unless, ofcourse, I am in the middle of storm or something like that). I do not know whether the filters would actually degrade IQ, except for my polarizer I should have top of line models, but at least in those controlled situations I do not have to guess.

Oh. About hoods, if you have one, that's one thing you should really use. I learned my lesson in one night shot session, where maybe 20% of wide angle shots had various odd reflections and such. Something that a hood could probaply have prevented. And obviously, it is great for protection. Don't leave home without it.

Canon EOS 40D and 50D, some lenses with curious red stripes and other gadgets. Previously a very satisfied owner of 20D.

I've realized digital cameras don't need UV filters because any blue haze can be corrected easily during PP. And I agree that it doesn't make sense to cover good glass with $20 glass (for 58mm size).
