okay so tonight we had some clear skies...did these in my backyard to show you guys how it works...the first two images are @11mm...70 seconds exposure time ISO 200 f4.0 and 75 seconds ISO 200 f2.8......No star trails at all, which is exactly what i wanted to do with the wide angle lens as i'll be doing milky way shots on my trip to PA. Terrible shots, but i wanted to try this thing out.

50mm 1.8

ISO 100, f3.2, 1 minute exposure times for both....the first is tracked, and the second is not...you can see the difference. At 50mm tracked, i do get a bit of trailing, but you can only tell when at 100%...although i did a quick polar alignment so it wasnt really properly aligned, but once again, im not doing this for longer focal lengths yet.

nice job man that is a clever way to tackle a technical solution which would otherwise cost alot of money to accomplish. I dont know if you have ever seen one of those devices made by astro trac but they are almost 700 bucks. This solution beats that any day as you can get a motorized equatorial mounted telescope for under 120 bucks. Ditch the crappy telescope and hook up the camera!

thanks! its well worth it...i paid a total of $90 for the mount tripod and scope...i couldnt pass it up!

yeah, ive seen the astro trac....its amazing but way out of budget!

i do need to add some sort of counter weight on the dec. axis though...simple modification of adding a weight...no biggie

Cool post pictures when you are done. I have a really crappy zhummell telescope and I am probably going to try and emulate this design when all is said and done.
