Getting one or the other for my mother who is a newbie on a Rebel T3 and barely has any idea what she is doing.

All my stuff is top-tier L lenses I know nothing about these but she won some money at slots I guess so she wants something with some reach.

Photozone.de

They have good reviews, if not a bit over technical and harsh when rating lens that are not top tier.

The 75=300 is pretty bad and I can't speak for the Tammy. 55-250 would be my choice.

+1 on the 55-250IS. Stay away from the 75-300.. even if it's free. ;)

I got a 75-300 MkIII with my first dslr and I only kept it for just over 2 months and for most of that time I was trying to sell it. Mine wasn't the USM version and IMO I think it's probably Canon's worst ever lens. It's the only lens I've ever owned that I've got no photos taken with it. Not 1 keeper in about 9-10 weeks of having it. I'd have to agree with the others above and go for the 55-250 IS, which is a cracker of a lens.

EOS 5D MkIII, EOS 70D, EOS 650D, EOS M, Canon 24-70 f2.8L MkII, Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII, Canon 100 f2.8L Macro, Canon 17-40 f4L IS, Canon 24-105 f4L IS, Canon 300 f4L IS, Canon 85 f1.8, Canon 50 f1.4, Canon 40 f2.8 STM, Canon 35 f2, Sigma 150-500 OS, Tamron 18-270 PZD, Tamron 28-300 VC, 580EX II Flash, Nissin Di866 MkII Flash, Sigma EM 140 Macro Flash and other bits.

Amazon has the 55-250 for $189 today w/ free shipping and, depending on state, no tax. While not a super deal, still a decent price for a very respectable budget zoom lens.
