Pinky The Worm - Video

A large Freshwater Bristle Worm, species unknown, identified as Dero digitata, from the silt and mud at the bottom of my microbe aquarium. It was suggested that I dredge that and see what was living in it. I knew there were worms, cause I could see their tunnels next to the glass. Apparently there are lots of them, cause I got at least this one the first try.

Thanks Rick. Most of the worms are almost transparent at this size. The real discovery on this one, at least for me, was seeing and recognizing the cilia on the tail, to ensure fresh water flows over the gills. That was a real find for me.

Thanks for looking Bas and Tmoore. These kind of worms are very cool to watch. They make up a huge part of the diet of migratory shore birds. When you see them knitting the water and sand along a lake shore or river bank like a runaway sewing machine, this is what they are after.

Thanks for looking Brian, MadJack and Rob. I should dredge the mud more often, cause I see plenty of worm tunnels in the muck. Wonder what else is down there.
