So I just got my 5D Mark II, a brought a new one.

But when I went to pick it up it just came in an unmarked white box, the man behind the counter guaranteed me, it were brand new. Everything was wrapped in foil however not the camera that lay in something felt + bubble wrap. However, it seems brand new, there is not a scratch on it. I put in my CF card, format the card (it has been used in another camera) and shoot a few pictures. To my great surprise the picture is named "100-8598"? I download EOSInfo up, which shows a shuttercount of 10 which is consistent with the number of photos I've shot.

But now I'm not sure, I ended up with a new-used camera or is it just my card that play pranks?

I'd trust the software. It sounds like your card was just off, especially since it's been in another camera.

If you used the card in another camera previously (formatted or not) and it used the same Canon file system, then what you're seeing is completely normal.

The camera generates the next file number (100-8598) based on the following:
Does the camera have a current number? (In this case, it wouldn't). If it DID, and the card had been used in another camera, the camera will use the highest number on the card(hence the 100-8598). This is to prevent overwriting existing photos. Formatting via the camera doesn't remove the number sequence; this is why when you format a card, you don't necessarily go back to zero (unless you have your camera set up that way). EOSInfo is probably accurate. One thing I would check is the bottom of the camera; see if there is a pinhole next to the serial number. This is a way that they mark refurbished cameras that often gets overlooked. If there's no puncture, then it's a new camera, probably taken out of a kit box or something.

Sounds like the card to me, but if it came in a plain white box it may be from a kit(dealers sometimes break them up to make more money selling separately). If it came in a box like in the link below(Google image search) it's a refurbished camera.

This reset you picture count. As MrBernie says, as soon as you put a CF card into your camera and the card had a image number higher than te one in your body, the body sets it to the new next image #.

To avoid this, format the card in a PC first.

You can also reset the image count in your camera so it starts fresh.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

like others have said, it's in the cards. www.eoscount.com (external link) is the correct number

Just to put a spanner in the works with the card. When I got my 5D3 I put a card in it that had been used in my 7D without formatting it and it came up with the following number, but once I'd formatted the card in the camera it gave me a new folder and started off at C01C0001 as the file number. More than likely it's a new camera out of a damaged box. You might have to check the settings to see whether it's on continuous shooting or not. I sincerely hope you didn't get a refurb as if they have a new shutter fitted they reset the count to 0, but everything other than the shutter is however old.

A guy on another forum recently bought a new Sony Alpha camera only to find the new card started of at image no. 1516 IIRC, and it turns out it was a return that was a couple of weeks old but sold as new at new camera price. Strange things happen, but not that often.
