Yesterday I photographed a drumming Ruffed Grouse on a spectacular moss covered rock. In all my years of observing and photographing Ruffed Grouse, I have always found them "drumming" on logs or disintegrated log mounds... almost always covered with moss. The first two photos were taken on the rock and the last image is on a "standard" moss covered log, framed with a "tunnel of light."

Oh, good for you, Dave; great shooting in the forest primeval and a handsome specimen at that.

Dave, you have raised the bar once more and this time, by quite a bit.

The bird is fitting of its name. He looks like a king. Your photos, well, they belong on a wall, in a place of distinction. Thank you so much for sharing them with us. The last is amazing for the special light and pose. The first is the perfect portrait. The second, a great display.

Congratulations on the captures on the rock. What comes next?
