Lens question

Hi all.

I'm new to this forum and also fairly new to DSLR photography.

I've decided to update / upgrade from my old (but in perfect working order) Pentax ME Super and Canon A20 Powershot to a new Canon EOS 1100D which came with the standard 18-55 lens.

My favourite lens on my old Pentax was a 28-70 which covered just about everything I needed and I was wondering what the consensus of opinion was regarding a similar lens for my new 1100D. The current 18-55 lens has Image Stability and Auto Focus which I'd like to keep on any replacement lens and I was wondering what you folks here would recommend.

Thanks in anticipation of your help and advice.

Neil.

Welcome to the forum.

Well, since you have a crop body, I’d suggest a 17-55 f/2.8 for all around photography. I’d say 24-70L but it really shines on a full frame body (5D, 5D mark II, 1Ds, etc)

I would suggest sticking with the kit now until you decide what it is not doing for you. The kit will give you a field of view focal range close to your old Pentax (roughly 28-90mm). The kit lens is pretty cheaply made, but it is a good performer optically.
Oh and welcome to the Forum!

6D, 5D, 7Dii, Eos R and too many lenses, flashes and aux. gear to list!

Keep the kit lens and go pick up a 55-250

Between the two you can take a wide range of photographs; should be able to find one used for under $200.00 USD

If your original Pentax lens was f/2.8, then follow Iluxa007's advice with the 17-55. You probably will not be going FF soon. If you don't need the f2.8, then follow Rocky's advice stay with the kit lens and eventually follow-up with a 55-250. Then go some version of ultrawide. All of the above have very good IQ. They will handle you for a time, until you decide if you really want/need better lenses.
