On my old [cheap] tripod I began to run into trouble when I moved up to larger cameras and lens. When using my 24-105 in portrait mode the weight of the lens would pull down and tilt and not stay in position.
What type of tripod-head combo is recommended. I won't be using it much so I don't want to go overboard on the cost.

Well, what is going overboard? I am assuming with the gear you have listed you would not really risk it on a cheap tripod. I don't think you need to spend $1000 on one, but you need to explain what you will use it for and if you will be traveling with it. Tripods can be cheap, light or stable, pick two you can't have all three. I recently sold my Manfrotto for a new Benro travel angel and can't be happier with it.

How much are you looking to spend? Does not appear that weight is an issue if you will not be carrying it around. I used to have the Manfotto 190xprob legs that were very stable, but did not fold down very small. I recommend those and then you can add a head that fits your needs. Check the sell forum for a used tripod, I sold my old legs and head for $200, there are deals like this often in that forum.

I am more concerned with the head. The tilting or dropping of the lens issue. Is there a better type of head that addresses this problem?

I usually suggest something in the Slik Pro DX line when someone is looking for a decent quality affordable tripod.

This time around though, I'll recommend the Giottos legs & Manfrotto head that I just listed for sale a few minutes ago:

OK, I'll stick with the Slik recommendation. My tripod sold in 1 hour on the Sell forum.

From what I've read, the Manfrotto 055XPROB / 498RC2 combo is a tried and true sweet spot...As a matter of fact, I have that combo arriving tomorrow. :)

Add up the weight of your body, lens, and flash, then multiply that total by 3. Then see Load Capacity - these have gotten good reviews by a few POTN members -
