thanks guys I was using the light activated trigger in magic lantern. It supposedly has a 300-400 millisecond delay so its kind of useless for capturing lightning unless it strikes again during the time the image is still exposing. I think its better to just use bulb mode and start exposing just before you "feel" lightning is going to strike. This shot was disappointing for me in contrast to the amazing gargantuan lightning bolts i missed that night. Also after doing this I realized that you have to have some extremely dumb luck to capture lightning without the rain looming overhead.

I was waiting for this storm to get here, but it fizzled out just as it was arriving.
After a few minutes of getting absolutely nothing, I was preparing to pack it up when this bolt shot down front and center!

Gear: A lot more than I deserve and a lot less than I want!

This was also my first time trying to photograph lightning. View from second floor, took it from inside the house. I had the shutter speed at 2 seconds and when I clicked for testing, the sky said "Cheese". Very surprised I even got this shot. Not the best but this is literally the only shot I was able to pull off.

I've tried it a couple of times, not in the best conditions. Most of the lightning was either cloud-to-cloud or quite weak, so i was at ISO400 to get it to show up.

Apart from the first one, which was close and lit up all the rain drops.
