Some good points/thoughts coming in....thanks guys.

Well, I've played with the Nikon V1 and though I don't like the auto side of it (clearly added for people coming from P&S), the lenses made for it are very good. And the adapter for dSLR Nikon lenses, is, of course, an adapter.....so that could be clicked into place on, say, a 30mm f/1.4 in a small side bag, while the camera could have its own, say, 25~110mm f/3.5 on the body, in your hand.

What I'm hearing in the city, is that July/August could be "time" for the announcement/release from Canon.

Fingers crossed!!!!!
:D

EF mount would be stupid as the camera would still have to be as deep as a DSLR, so what's the point of removing the mirror? See the K-01 for how that turns out. Big lenses and a body that isn't compact. We already have the 5D for that.

I am sure an EF mount would be an optional adapter, but native EF mount ruins the whole idea of the camera.

No, no....the adapter gives the Nikon the ability to use lenses made for dSLRs.

Basically, it converts a compact camera into a big, fat lens (with a tiny-wee camera attached )

The Nikon V1 here comes with a 10-30mm f/3.5~5.6 for around 60,000 yen (≈30-90mm FF).
The 30-110mm f/3.8~5.6 is another 22,000 yen (≈80-300mm FF).
The 10-100mm f/4.5~5.6 is around 62,000 yen.
The adapter is about 11,000 yen.
Plus they've a 10mm f/2.8 prime, too (≈30mm FF).........for a compact camera!!!!!
Plus a flash unit which clips on top. I've not seen one in the shop yet, and couldn't be bothered to ask the price for you to compare.......sorry.

So, if Canon can do that (and better, I hope!), then my 100-400L would have a FOV resembling that from something like a 250-1000mm lens!
:lol::lol::lol:

And all for "spare change"........!

Anyway, it's "Golden Week" here from tomorrow, so I'm busy at work. But I'll try to drop into the shop next weekend to chat to the guys again.

Any more news....please add it.

Simon

So you want a Canon version of the Nikon 1 with a 2.7x crop sensor? You might be the only one. I think most people would want something closer to the Fuji Xpro or NEX7.

Err....that bit was a joke.

What I want, is a mirrorless compact camera with either a "full-frame" sensor, or 1.3x (and I'd be "OK" with 1.6) which has a tiny-wee prime 35 or 50(ish)mm f/2(ish), plus a tiny-wee 20mm-100(ish)mm f/3.5(ish) zoom.
And which also has an adapter, allowing it to accept my current EF/EF-S lenses.

If its AF is not as snappy as my 7D, that's fine.

If its frame rate is slower...that's fine!

I want a light-weight, walk-about, pocket-able, high quality, image monster for shooting mostly easy stuff, but which, with a few twists and some tweaking can deal with more demanding stuff.

TTFN.

Simon :D

Nope. Most people want something similar to the Leica M9. Or even more so, a Canon version of the upcoming Leica M10.

Full frame is the way to go for mirrorless.

Well I can't speak for anyone else, but this is exactly what I want and I'm worried that the X1-Pro is the closest I'll be able to get without buying the real thing....

Yup, the mirrorless should be full frame. Or they won't get my money! :p

I don't see why it shouldn't be. You get much better DOF capabilities and better noise performance.

At the expense of larger lenses, larger bodies and/or larger price tag. High end mirrorless is a hugely niche market.

I think the reason Nikon entered and Canon would enter is because m4/3 and NEX are stealing $500-1000 SLR sales. The famous Rebel line that has cleaned up for Canon for 10 years. Nikon and Canon already own the FF market.

According to these people, Canon is very soon going to announce something which will tramp all over the Nikon V1.

I've also seen alledged patents for a Canon EF lens adaptor to hook EF lenses to what appears to be a compact, mirrorless camera.

Could it really be that Canon will let us dSLR users have a small "walk-about" body which will have its own, cute-but-fairly-high-quality lens system, but which will also be able to use our current lens lineup?

If you hear/know anything, please post it up...........

I, for one, will defintely want one.......as long as it can produce 75%+ of what I can do with my 7D/EF lenses, right now.

Regards,

Simon

Hey Simon...good call! I wonder what it would look like with the EF 600 stuck on the front. A pocket camera for someone with DEEP pockets!??

Well hello, sir!
Good to see you adding your tuppence-worth.

And I'm hoping to drop in to see my mateys at the "Geek Camera Shop" again, perhaps Monday/Tuesday (though Missus Skygod says we're supposed to be going away to see her grandmother...)

As to an Ef600 on a tiny-wee mirrorless camera, I think it would be the dog's b's!

To me, having read Canon's CEO's commentsa couple of months ago, and seeing the 5D3 come out (what was the point, and wow! what a price), I think "mirrorless" really is they way Canon are going.

Though only time will tell...............

July/August makes sense, get it into the supply chain in time for holiday spending.

I believe these cameras are the future of photography, we're a few years away from where I'd replace my DSLR's with one, but I'm pretty sure it will happen.

A mirror-free Canon compact with either a 1.3x of FF sensor would be interesting. Actually if it were FF I would stay with a 5Dx since the 5D body isn't that big anyway and I would still have the frame rate which a compact is unlikely to have. However we are talking about Canon so anything's possible IMHO. I'll sign up to the wait n see brigade ;)
