I did have a delivery time problem with Jessops on this lens and so bought it from Kerso after waiting for a couple of weeks. I got it at very nice price. Even though I managed to combine different discounts and added on the Canon Rebate so I was due to get the lens from Jessops for around £750, Kerso still easily beat that and had it to me in 5 days or so. Very nice lens indeed.

I had a 10% discount code from Jessops that they sent me in the post. These come through now and again if you register with them or have bought stuff from them in the past. I think I also used a referal cash back code from GreasyPalm and then the Canon £100 Cash Back voucher. Would have come to 736.99, I just checked, had I no cancelled. I remember Ian beat the price. if you have a Canon Rebate voucher you get it from Ian as people have been using the voucher with purchases from him. Just get a receipt from him.

People seem to use Paypal receipts quite happily and get the Rebate cash after buying from Ian. Problem I had is he never sent a receipt for ages and so I'd sold the lens by the time it arrived so couldn't claim the Rebate :-( I more than broke even on the sale so wasn't too bothered ... but £100 still leaves a hole in anyones pocket! I paid direct bank transfer so he didn't have to pay Paypal fees so I never got that receipt either. Very good seller tho'.

I was due to go to Africa for a 3-6 month 'safari' trip and bought the 100-400 IS L and 300mm IS L because I just could not decide whether to go for a prime, which I'd used in Africa before and experienced the limitations, or a zoom, which I'd got used to just playing around in the UK.

After a few hours testing the two I went for the zoom. IQ was not that different. I liked the 300mm IS L design a lot and despite hating the push pull on the zoom I knew it would suit me better overall.

The thing with African wildlife is you may need distance and you may need reasonably close capability too ... and you don't necessarily want to be changing lenses due to dust. Anyway, as it happened I got offered a new 18 month work contract that was hard to turn down, so I cancelled the trip and sold the 100-400 IS L too. Was sorry to see it go but I know I won't get use here to justify owning it ... most of the animals and birds are dead here these days :(
