Hi all,
Well, not any new species really... mostly just some recent shots from our "new" SX40.
But we'd start with our Bluebirds this time, because we want to report the successful fledging of their first nest of 2012 (5 nestlings) which took place this past Sunday. All the babies flew wonderfully well, are safely in the trees behind our house, and being fed by both parents.
Missy: (mother)
Ben: (father)
And here's a shot (from the S5-IS) of the only one of the 5 fledges that landed near enough for decent capture... our deck rail. All the others went straight from the box to various tall trees, and out of the reach of our lenses.
Missy has already started building her 2nd nest, and we expect the 1st-nesters will be "coming home" to the deck pretty soon, so we are hopeful to have further news on them all later.
So... anyway, now here are a few more new SX40 photos...
Mrs. Cardinal:
A Bluejay:
And... as some of you know, we typically must shoot at base ISO with our superzooms to hope for acceptable IQ. Which usually limits us to good lighting conditions and/or slow shutter speeds. But the SX40 is often achieving quite surprisingly better quality in less ideal lighting situations. So I'd like to show a few higher ISO shots here...
Chickadee @ ISO400 1/400:
Cardinal @ ISO640 1/400:
And our Tiger Bunny @ ISO1000 1/250:
I know such "high ISO" captures are common with many or most DSLR kits, but these shots are a veritable shock to us, and a very welcome improvement in low-light capability over our other small-sensor cameras.
And as always, we hope you enjoy the photos,
Kenn
