Hi all,

Well, not any new species really... mostly just some recent shots from our "new" SX40.
But we'd start with our Bluebirds this time, because we want to report the successful fledging of their first nest of 2012 (5 nestlings) which took place this past Sunday. All the babies flew wonderfully well, are safely in the trees behind our house, and being fed by both parents.

Missy: (mother)

Ben: (father)
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds-Blossoms/i-fgTxDMQ/0/XL/bluebirdben079-XL.jpg

And here's a shot (from the S5-IS) of the only one of the 5 fledges that landed near enough for decent capture... our deck rail. All the others went straight from the box to various tall trees, and out of the reach of our lenses.
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/photos/i-KVBgv72/0/XL/i-KVBgv72-XL.jpg
Missy has already started building her 2nd nest, and we expect the 1st-nesters will be "coming home" to the deck pretty soon, so we are hopeful to have further news on them all later.

So... anyway, now here are a few more new SX40 photos...
Mrs. Cardinal:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds-Blossoms/i-CGMmZFd/0/XL/sx40cardinal245-XL.jpg

A Bluejay:

And... as some of you know, we typically must shoot at base ISO with our superzooms to hope for acceptable IQ. Which usually limits us to good lighting conditions and/or slow shutter speeds. But the SX40 is often achieving quite surprisingly better quality in less ideal lighting situations. So I'd like to show a few higher ISO shots here...

Chickadee @ ISO400 1/400:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds-Blossoms/i-ks853td/0/XL/chickadee068-XL.jpg

Cardinal @ ISO640 1/400:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds-Blossoms/i-gwr4pmv/0/XL/cardinal013-XL.jpg

And our Tiger Bunny @ ISO1000 1/250:
IMAGE: http://kenn3d.smugmug.com/Nature/Birds-Blossoms/i-Vx7Sp2p/0/XL/sx40rabbit179-XL.jpg

I know such "high ISO" captures are common with many or most DSLR kits, but these shots are a veritable shock to us, and a very welcome improvement in low-light capability over our other small-sensor cameras.

And as always, we hope you enjoy the photos,

Kenn

Kenn, you are the master of the SX40. These are all great shots. Seems early for fledglings already.

Regards,
Chuck

Kenn, you make the "super zoom" shine, and set a standard for this old man and his new SX40. Settings and distance always appreciated...I'm presently forced to get my first pix through double window glass; YUK

Cheers, Gil

terrific images Kenn, and I think the iso400 is probably better than some entry level slr's! You can hardly see it!

I'll have to have a look at the SX40, those are all great, Kenn, and I always love your bluebird shots. But the pic that made me smile was that spunky looking little chickadee ;)

Kenn, you make me wonder if I should take up another hobby. Outstanding! Each and every one.
The Chickadee is the prize for me.

BTW
Thanks for pointing out the color problem. With Levina's help, I believe it to be solved.

Excellent variety and clarity Kenn... they all are lovely images. Always great to get a fledgling report on your "blues"... cutest bird on the planet. ;)

Thanks everyone for all your encouraging comments. We really appreciate them.

And btw, for those who've expressed an interest in the SX40... I forgot to mention another new feature offered by this little cam which we're also enjoying; Slow-motion Video Capture.

It's a pretty low-tech implementation I guess, and likely won't rival any dedicated video camera. But we did try it out during our Bluebird Fledge-Day shoot...
This is Ben enticing a nestling to fledge in slow-motion:

And here is a short edited clip showing 2 of the nestlings actually making their first leaps into the outside world... also in slomo:

We hope some of you will enjoy these too, and thanks again to all of you.

Kenn
