Hi all,

Ok, I shoot using a full-frame 5D classic (Mk1) body, I'm looking for a wide angle lens for landscape photography etc.

I had a Samyang 14mm lens but it was too wide for me personally. I've a Samyang 35mm f/1.4 which is fine, but something just a little wider would be nice, but I don't have any knowledge about 24/28mm lenses etc. What lens is a good performer and good all rounder?

I don't mind manual focus lenses etc... Any advice welcome please.

Thanks!

^^The TS-E lenses are super sharp in 17mm and 24mm FL, but the Zeiss 21 2.8 is reputed also to be stunning.

Of course many just use the 17-40 which is a fine zoom, but not as sharp as the primes.

Growing old disgracefully!

I just bought a 16-35 2.8 II, and I find it well suited for landscape, but also a good general purpose lens, tack-sharp on my 5Dc.

The 16-35mm f/2.8 Mark II is good stopped down; I have that. The Zeiss ZE 21mm f/2.8 has moustache distortion, but according to the test sites is otherwise excellent optically. I use an adapted OM Zuiko 24mm f/2.8 on a 5D when I want a small, light kit for landscape.

I like the sound of the OM Zuiko 24mm f/2.8 lens, would I require an adaptor etc? How much are they and are they easy to find/buy etc?

Thanks for replies, appreciated.

(I really think under 24mm would be too wide for my use on a full-frame)

As a landscapist I find my 24-70L is my most used lens.

But we are all different (thank goodness) and what suits me might not suit the 'tog standing behind his tripod next to me on the hilltop at 0400am. I tend to see in terms of longer rather than shorter focal lengths and have a few successful landscapes at 400mm.

Thanks Lowner;

I've a EF 70-200mm f/2.8 (non IS), handy for longer landscape shots etc. I've heard good things regards the 24-70mm.

Yes, an adaptor and preferably an Ee-S screen to make focussing easier and metering accurate. It *may* be possible to get accurate metering with the stock screen and a programmable adaptor but I just use an unchipped one. You will be using "stop down metering".

How much are they and are they easy to find/buy etc?

Can't say, I already had it from my film kit. They're a "cult" lens now, so not peanuts, but they were popular in their day so they're not rare either. Make sure you get a multicoated one: the pre-MC ones said "X-Zuiko" where X is a letter, rather than just "Zuiko".

For about $600 you can pick up a Zuiko 21, 24 and 28mm lens and you'll be all set for landscape photography. Excellent quality and a very light kit.

With my full frame, I'm so in love with my 17-40 it's not even funny. The husband half expects it to be lying between us in bed. :)

Who says that a landscape lens must be wide? I do most of my landscaping with the 70-200. :)

It is not about how much you can fit into your photo, it is about what you choose to fit in it.

However, I am about to buy the TS-E 24 II.

Too bad its a Nikon lens. But yeah, it is much better than Canon's prime lenses 14L and 24L.

I wonder when Canon will make a UWA-zoom like this one.

IMO for wide landscapes you can't beat something with shift. I wanted something really wide so I'm not sure if there are 3rd party shift lenses in the 24mm range.

the 17-40 and 16-35 zooms are decent stopped down, but I'm sorry, calling either of them 'tack sharp' just tells me you have not used a truly sharp lens or do not print larger than 8x10.

For price/value though the 17-40 is hard to beat and is certainly sharp enough at f8-f11 to produce very nice shots/prints.

I would have thought tilt would be more useful for wide landscapes than shift.
