That's a pretty nice shot.

Great. Our bee population here is hurting from some kind of mite outbreak I think.

I understand that is the issue in most of the US (external link). I believe the majority of our bees down here are hybridized with African bees ('killler bees'). They are very aggressive and not great honey producers, if I understand it correctly.

If thats the case, I hope this was with a Super telephoto! Nice shot, love the symmetry.

I have a seminar just outside of Phoenix thats still almost a year away, but I'm already trying to think of where to shoot! Might take an extra day or two while I'm there. Saguaro was one of my thoughts.

There are lots of great places.

This is my favorite bird place:

Other great spots include Desert Botanical Garden, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and the list goes on.

PM me with any specific questions and I'll be glad to try and help.

Thanks for the tips Ian. The Riparian might be just the ticket!

The Riparian is a wonderful place for birds. Most of my bird pix are from there. You'll probably want at least a 400mm (I use the Canon 400/5.6), but you'll wish you had more.

I guess I won't be travelling light this time. I'll probably bring my 300/2.8 with the 1.4 and 2X extenders. Heck, maybe the 100-400 as well so I can have some versatility. Time to hit the weight room.

Rick, are you using the Canon 2X extender? Since I know that no 500/4 is in my future, I've been looking at 300's with 2X. Looking at the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 OS and the Canon 300/2.8. The Sigma is so much cheaper, but leaning toward a used Canon (which I should be able to afford before I die). I know that I'll never be able to afford the MkII version.
