I have a 430EX II, but would a reflector be good to have as well?

As the title says, I bought a 430EX II for the purpose of indoor photos as well as outdoor portraits. I plan on using the flash both on camera or just off camera to the side as a fill flash. Should I look into purchasing a 5 in 1 reflector as well or should the flash be all that I need?

I have found the flash to be VERY helpful indoors both on the camera and bounced as well as off the camera on a tripod. Have not had a chance to try it outdoors yet though :( .

I use a Gary Fong Lightsphere with mine also. It works great for interior shots and also for portraits.

sometimes when you are outside, a reflector is all you need. a reflector can soften shadows and bring a bit of light on the side opposite of where you have your flash positioned. it's all a matter of preference depending on the look you are going for.

I would get the refelctor to have just in case. you can get them pretty cheap on Amazon.

I have this one, $22

I second the suggestion to get a reflector. Just get one big enough for whatever your subject is going to be. I suggest you do lots of reading before wasting your money on anything that Fong sells.

If you absolutely want a modifier for your flash when on-camera, you can buy fun foam for around $1 a sheet from your arts and craft store and make a bounce reflector with a few pieces of Velcro. I'm sure someone will post a link to a thread that has the instructions for it.

would it be worth purchasing a shoot through white umbrella with a light stand + adapter for my flash? I would probably buy some budget type of triggers as well to go with it. Would this help with outdoor portraits?

anyone have any input on if a light stand and shoot through umbrella would help my photography using the flash for indoor and outdoor portraits?

Your 60D should be able to control your flash wirelessly if I'm not mistaken.

I thought that was very limited in daylight... but I just tested it very far away and pointed away and it still went off.... so I am assuming it should still go off.

I'd take a long look through some of the picture threads here - the single strobe one in particular. That way you might get an idea if you like the kind of light it produces.

You can get a light stand, umbrella and adapter for around $70 or less - so it won't break the bank if you decide you don't like it.

As long as the sensor on the flash can see the camera and it doesn't have direct sun shining on it, it should be pretty good.

check out my sig for ideas for a low-cost off-camera setup. you will obviously not be interested in the entire setup, and since you have the flash already, you can skip those as well.

Anyone have a reflector with boom setup? I don't have assistants often and want to know how stable the booms are. Bh only has impact ones but no great reviews

it's useful especially night shot, i usually use a yellow colour paper on the flash together with the umbrella, it makes a good white balance on people face.

if you do not have an assistant, you may make good use of your flash at the lowest output with a stand rather than a reflector. it's hard to control the angel
