Hey guys! I'm visiting Hong Kong in July after my army boot camp (yay!) and need some advice about gear as well as places I can go to get good deals for lenses!

I own the following:

Canon 5D2

Tokina 16-28 2.8
Canon 35 1.4L
Sigma 85 1.4
Canon 70-200 2.8L MK1

I have access to the following by borrowing before flying off:

Canon 16-35 2.8L MK2
Canon 17-40 4L
Canon 50 1.4
Canon 135 2L

All of it will go into a Retrospective 10 bag.

It's my first time going to HK, and we'll be visiting places like ocean park and venetian city in Macau, as well as other places not decided yet.

The thing is that my usual kit for local street & social shoots are the 16-28, 35, 85. Do you guys think that the addition of a 135L will be good enough for Ocean Park (or HK in general?) or should I bring the 70-200 instead?

Also, where in HK are the good (cheap) stores for buying equipment, specifically lenses and video accessories?

I don't know anything about purchasing camera gear in HK, but if I had your gear and access to gear I would personally bring the 16-35L for sure. The prime selection on top of the 70-200 is a bit of a toss up, but I would definitely bring the 35L.

Anyway have a good time and good luck with bootcamp! I'll be going to HK in Nov/Dec!

I'm into traveling light, spent a couple of years where I was in HK a week out of every month. I'd bring a 17-40, and the 135L.

I'd bring all your lenses but switch the 16-28 with the 16-35 just because of the size and weight difference

When I travel in HK, my first stop is Sim City, Mong Kok located. A lot of camera stuff, new and used.

HK has good used photography market, one of my friend get a like new 16-35 mk2 for 8000 HK dollars 1 year ago..
Center of HK is crowded, maybe you need a wide angle, if you get a fisheye maybe something dramatic will happpen

Fly me away.

Just go light, wide, you don't want to carry around tens of lbs of equipments in July in like 35°C. Long range is not that useful unless you really want the big panda head shot in Ocean park.

My travel kit is always the 16-35L and 85/1.8 or 135L (took the latter on my last trip to HK). UWA is an absolute must, IMO. The 70-200 might serve you better than the 85/135, but I honestly can't stand the bulk and weight of the 70-200's for travel.

Alright thanks for the advices everyone! I've decided to bring the 5D2, 16-35 mk2 (borrowed), 85 1.4 and 135L (borrowed). Might bring a 35L... or should I go buy my Sigma 50mm 1.4 in HK? Not to sure... Anyone know about Sigma warranty over in this side of the world?

Oh btw, I have a think tank retrospective 10 that will fit everything all fine, but is there anyone who can recommend a good bag for travel? Maybe something that can fit a jacket as well as have easy access to lenses. I used to have a Lowepro Primus AW but sold it a long time ago... bad idea!

I attached a link to Roland Lim who provide a very comprehensive article on price list of camera and lens in HKG ( price may change as the list is not updated). Also some good recommendations of the camera shops in HKG. I have good experience from Echo in TST. Most important enjoy your holidays. Cheers.

Amateur photographers are everywhere in Hong Kong. I wouldn't be surprised if I see guys with 70-200 2.8 type of lens in the places you are visiting. In fact, it is very common that you will see expensive gears being used everywhere. So don't be afraid to bring the biggest lens you have if it's necessary for the type of pictures you trying to get. But do bring something like a 24-105 for the street because you don't want to be changing lens in Mong Kok. The streets are very very very crowded! Enjoy the city that you will never forget!

If you have an access to a 1.4x extender, I would take that as well. It is compatible with the 135L and will make it into a 189mm f2.8.

It's not that much more weight but can come in handy if you need to get a tighter shot.

I just came back 2 weeks ago. Used my 24-105L as my walk around lens. I do sometimes wish I had a 16-35 with me though (I'm on crop).

I usually take the 35L with me travelling "just in case", but I personally find it redundant most of the time due to the 16-35L. The 50 should work well though!
