Canon's Poor Delivery - or is it bait and switch?

Back in March I was really excited to place my order for the new, but very expensive, 5D Mark III. But I was a little bumed out that the BG-E11 grip would be available right away and was scheduled for the end of April. Placed my pre- order anyway.

Now after hoping my pre-ordered would ship this week I hear that it will probably be delayed another month which will probably also delay the delivery of any compatible L-brackets for the grip even more. It will also cause me to spend extra money to get some kind of camera plate to use in the interim so I can use my tripod.

Also seeing delays on accessories and the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II. And what about the 1DX, I'm sure the original announcement stopped some potential buyers from considering the D4. And it continues to be delayed.

Question is why is Canon continue to miss their committed ship dates. Are the intentionally claiming availability dates to keep themselves in the race with Nikon?

This kind of tactic was used by IBM back in the day to prevent their customers from looking at competitive products when the really were not ready to deliver.

I have my new camera body but no grip or bracket to use it effectively for me. And maybe the rush to make good on an unrealistic delivery promise is why I have to send mine back for the light leak?

The GP-E2 receiver seems to be in the same boat. We are free to preorder....but no firm delivery dates.

Yes. This has been very evident for quite some time now. Canon is rushing like a mad dog.

Just look at the problems with the 5D3 release. The light leak, the delayed battery grip, and the fact that DPP wasn't even ready for the camera. Canon rushed the release of the 5D3, just because they are afraid of the D800 - a superior camera with a lower price tag.. They knew that they were going to lose customers to Nikon.

The main reason to why the 1DX is still not avalible (now 7 months after the announcement), is simply because Canon freaked out and decided to focus all their energy and resources on rushing the 5D3.

Just my theory.

Spot on. Now, where is the like button?

Regarding the 1DX, I think we'll see it at the end of june if we are lucky. The 5D3 battery grip as well.

CR says late may for the BG-E11, but yeah, june is also a good guess.

I really like Canon and their products but I just want them to do what they say and say what they REALLY plan to do. I didn't switch the body to Nikon because I'm a fan of the entire Canon system (owned them for the better part of 20 years) but I now feel that I should assume 3-6 month delay and spend my money based on that. I sold my 24-70mm f/2.8L too soon because I thought I could get the new one at the end of April but that was a big mistake.

^ Well done guys :) Now kiss and move along. Off to Happy Canon Rainbowland! There is nothing for you to see here.

I fully agree with op and the others in this thread. We have no idea what lies behind Canon's strange release tactics (if we can call it tactics?). But whatever it is, someone has screwed up big time.

Get real. 99% of the pros who would be buying the 1DX have so much invested in glass that the mere thought of switching systems would make them puke. Rushing out an announcement only to be delayed had almost zero effect on anyone decision to change or stick with their kit. This argument is just so ridiculous it practically doesn't warrant a response. But I did anyway. :p

Delay? I thought Canon said May for the grip at release, and the retailers put up the April date.

Light leak? Non issue. Or issue if you like taking pictures of the back of your lens caps.

I still can't go to B&H or Adorama and see the D800 in stock either. Should I start the "Nikon's Poor Delivery - or is it bait and switch?" thread, or would you like to?
