Why are there always so many Sigma 85mm 1.4's of the Nikon mount available on FM, but never any for the Canon mount? And no one ever touches the Nikon versions, while the Canon versions disappear quickly. Inquiring minds want to know.

Nice! How do you like the bokeh compression vs 85L’s compression?

Thanks! Well I can certainly say it isn't an 85L. I would like to test it some more before I make any real comparisons or judge it accordingly. So far I like it, AF is solid and fast, although it makes a weird noise when focusing? It started doing that after about 2-3 hours of use, I don't know if that's normal or not.

Anyways, I have a bunch of shots from today uploading to Zen as we speak.

I can successfully say I miss my 85L though.

Still looking to get one? What about your 85L II?

Hehe... Focus on 70-200 II is the best. The noise is probably the IS?

That's what I was thinking. It's strange because it just all the sudden made that noise. I though AF was going to lock on itself, but it probably is IS.

Getting one, eventually. The 85L isn't amazing enough that I think it's worth $900 extra.

The bokeh on the 300 2.8 is pretty fantastic too, easily comparable with the 70-200 II at 200mm. This one's at 600mm @ 5.6. The out of focus highlights are pretty much perfectly circular.

Bokeh is really nice there. I would like to test out the bokeh on some people by having them pose and take closer shots. Anyways, I am going to need to get an extender for this lens. Moko, would a 1.4x from Canon be fine? I am going to need one by next fall, so I have a ton of time but I just want to know if it's worth it to get the 1.4 or if it's not such a downgrade in quality the 2.0.

Depends what you've got in mind. Canon is your only choice if you want a matching extender with weather sealing. Kenko MC4 if you want the sharpest glass (but without coatings). Kenko pro300DGx if you want quality similar to the Canon variant, but with the ability to be used with all EF lenses.

I do not recommend a 2x TC with the 70-200 II. IS will still be plenty good, but the AF speed will be horrible. I also was not impressed with the sharpness I was seeing at 400mm. For me, AF is the most important X-factor. If AF won't lock or track fast enough, it doesn't matter how sharp the TC is. The 2x TCs are designed to reduce AF by 50%. If you're shooting static targets most of the time, give it a try.

Ok, well FWIW I think 1.4x should be good enough. Even at a full 200mm I could still crop it down far enough to get a nice sharp shot of what I liked. I would rather skip out on the cropping though.

I would rather get the Canon brand personally, but is the Kenko the best? And which makes AF speed slower?

No, Kenko is not the best, but there are tradeoffs no matter what choice you make. Kenko makes the best 3rd party TCs, and the pro300s give very similar results to the Canon TCs. The pro300s are very slightly inferior to the mkIIs. The MC4 TCs are tested sharper than the mk2 extenders, and the mk3 extenders. Again, no coatings though, and that can make a big difference.

2x TCs reduce AF speed by a lot, even in the best lighting. The focusing algorithms cap it at a certain speed for 2x TCs. The exception is the 2x III tcs paired with the mk2 telephoto primes.

Oh alright, well I will probably wind up just going with Canon. I don't think I'll get a 2x extender though, I was thinking 1.4x from the start to more so resemble crop or at least get closer to crop.

How much does the 1.4x slow down AF?

Negligible. YOu probably won't even notice it, except in dim lighting--then it will hunt noticeably. But you shouldn't be using TCs at night or indoors anyhow.

$110? I told you I had some buyers that I had to turn down :p

If I didn't have 2x luma loops, I'd have keep the DR-1. Great strap, but it feels like body armor.

Unless it's for sports like indoor soccer or football, or the likes, but then the place should be sufficently lit. Even so, I wouldn't ever have a need for it then, so if that's true I will make it my goal to get one
