My basic understanding is that Ivy Bridge is 22nm cpu (vs 32nm for Sandy Bridge) and supports PCI-E 3.
And sadly it's only about 5% faster clock for clock... if that. The LGA1155 variants have been really lackluster.

I'd like to see them toss in Kepler into the Macbooks, even the 640m is quite a good chip. It will fit but it may not work. The BIOS, chipset etc, has to support the processor. A BIOS or firmware update might be provided by manufacturers to make them compatible. | Canon EOS Systems |

Maybe, but there can be hardware issues with it as well.

I was referring to them not working in older LGA 1155 boards. But this has been discussed already. I wouldn't buy a board that doesn't support PCI-3 anyways Will | WilliamLiuPhotography.com

Yes and no, most of the Sandbridge chips have been discounted a bit. Blurr Cube wrote in post #14362435 Hmmm... Just because I haven't posted in the 2AM threads doesn't mean I haven't been reading them. Besides, I can take it. And if I can't, I'll never admit that you're the reason I cry myself to sleep at night. I did a lot of lurking before finally posting on POTN. My posting on slickdeals has suffered because of this place

It's a step up over the HD2000/HD3000 found on Sandy Bridge, it's still mediocre at best. I think so. And yes they do, Z77 boards, actually all the major brands have had them for awhile now. Yes. They are the Z77 based boards. They've been out for a couple of months now. I know Sandy Bridge chips are compatible with Z77 boards, not sure if Ivy Bridge chips are compatible with the older chipsets though. I wouldn't say they're crap. Their design department is incompetent, their customer service departments don't reach anything remotely resembling competence, and their choice of hardware is hit and miss. But some of the products they offer do have good value. I really like the Pavillion DV line--they make good "gaming" laptops on a budget.
