whats the best metering system to use when you are shooting black or dark birds against a black sky? i tried a few and the black bird was nothing but shadow and the gray was well gray. or would be be best to use exposure lock on something bright near the ground and lock in then aim up and shoot?

#1 Looks like some kind of Shrike
#2 Are European Starling and Meadowlark

I am unfamiliar with Colorado birds, but these should point you in the right direction.

Waldemar may be right about the Kingbird and not a Shrike.

I think the top one is a Western Kingbird. The other yellow bird is Western Meadowlark. Nice shots! :)

I use spot metering. But whenever you are pointing your camera towards the sky, you need to overcompensate the exposure a bit, in general i mean. Otherwise, very oftent the subject would be underexposed against the bright sky.

thanks cfc! i appreciate the input.

and Score i agree with you on both birds! google likes proper names much better then yellow bird haha.

when you compensate do you usually just bump the exposure to overexpose the background and get a good exposure on the bird or is there another trick? :)

thanks again for the input made my day!

I hope you had a chance to hear the meadowlark sing. One of my favorite birds.

you now got the "birders eye" :) there's this small part in our brain that get activated once you appreciate the beauty of these flying creatures. it's the "bird zen" :). of course i am making this up, but i know what you are saying. cool captures of the kingbird and meadowlark :)
