While shooting the state HS football championships last weekend, my Canon 28-135 IS lens fell out of my ThinkTank belt and hit the floor of the photo tent, I believe lens hood first and bounced once before landing on its side. There doesn't appear to be any physical damage, and I used it to shoot the post-game jubes of two games after that. The IS still seems to work, and wonder of all wonders, the lens doesn't seem to have been broken in any way.

Is this possible? Could I have been this lucky? Any ideas what it would cost to send it to Canon to have it checked out?

that's why a lenshood is always important ;)

if the lens is still working fine i wouldn't send it to canon! the lenshood probably took all the energy away from the impact, so you are probably THAT lucky :D

He he, join the club.

My EF 28-135 IS dropped from the desk, flat on the side.
All I heard was "thud". It sounded like a brick.

No need for Cannon's service, I just put it on, it works fine.

If it works fine now, I don't think Canon will do anything about it. They'll just take a few test pictures then send it back.

My 75-300 IS once fell off the top of my car (it was in a small camera bag). It worked perfectly afterwards-in a mechanical sense anyways....
It was however slightly less sharp at the long end.I had just had it serviced before the accident so didn't feel like spending more.
So i never found out if such a flaw was worth fixing/could be fixed at a reasonable price

As suspected, I found some kindred spirits here. The only real critical application I have for this lens is T&I portraits and I always have my 85 f1.8 for back-up, so I guess I'll be OK.

Pretty amazing, thoough, that the lens could survive. That's the last time I pick up a ThinkTank belt without figuring out which end is up
