These last ones, I was like 500ft away and the lone goose in field was 300ft away. The goose poking his head above the grass was within 50ft...so I think distance/haze etc may contribute heavily to the problem. It wasnt even sunny, overcast on a 13C day in Canada...I may have a lot of problems in the summer at range!

Yes, the EC+ in Av/Tv mode is to handle the backlit situation.
