I am new to bird photography, and just got this lens so not sure on how it performs, so thought id ask you folks...

These are my cleaned up shots from earlier today, which seem to have hit. I will post the ones that seem to have front focused and you can len me know what you think.

Using spot AF and spot focus... I am happy with the goose.

Please let me know what i can do to improve!

Not sure what you mean spot AF and spot focus. In any event focus seems fine.

The osprey shots are underexposed. They look to me like it may have been a cloudy, white sky, which could cause the camera's metering to think the overall scene was a lot lighter than it really was. Against a light sky, I usually get best results setting my exposure manually so the sky doesn't influence it - use a setting that works for a neutral subject on the ground. If you're not comfortable with manual use evaluative metering with a stop or so additional exposure compensation.

When I used the lens you have I used AI Servo focus mode, evaluative metering, and for exposure either M or AV set at f/8, with with ISO set high enough for a shutter speed of at least 1/1000.

These are good shots - I especially like the ospreys.
