I think it's all about contrast.

The picture is already contrasty as hell in terms of light vs dark. The trees are silhouettes while the sky is white. Normally that'd be a big problem for me.

But the trees are also being held up by (I assume) wooden planks. That's really freaking weird, and the fact that it mirrors the extreme contrast in the landscape seems to be either very deliberate or an EXTREMELY lucky accident.

In any case, I like the photograph a lot.

Looks like straps to me.
