XT vs 40D--upgrade?

Sorry if this topic has specifically been covered before...I searched and could not find anything.

I currently have an XT. I have been wondering if the 40D would be enough of an upgrade over the XT to make it worth doing--I have been seeing several 40Ds in our local Craigslist for reasonable prices, and I don't have a lot of $$ to spend right now.

I would like to know in what ways the 40D would be an upgrade over my XT. I will say that ergonomically, I would much prefer the 40D over my XT. I have big hands, and the XT has always felt too little to me. Also, I would prefer the better grip of the 40D. I say all that because although ergonomics are not the end of the world, my dislike of the XT's ergonomics is significant enough to make it a factor. The ability to put a grip on would also be a plus (to my knowledge, there is no grip available for the XT).

My quite modest little gear list: 50D gripped | 135L | 50 1.4 | 50 1.8 | 85 1.8 | 28-105 3.5-4.5 | Speedlite 420EX | 2 Yongnuo 460ii | stands, 2 umbrellas, one softbox

Welcome to the forum. Although I have not owned either, I know the 40D is a super nice body. Although I don't like to post links on the forum here is a good comparison of the two.

I'll be darned. I have looked 10 different times on the web for a specific comparison of the 2 and haven't found one. REALLY need to brush up on my Google search capabilities apparently. Thanks for the link. That is precisely the kind of info I was looking for.

I went from an XT to a 7D.

However I have used a 40D before and I would say that would be an easy choice. I would absolutley do that upgrade if you can get a good deal. 40D is a great body. The Rebel to me felt like a toy once you handle a xxD

I own both... get a 40D you won't regret it. My XT is fine does a great job...but once you start using the 40D and get used to the ergo differences you'll have a lot more fun. Good luck!

My first dSLR was a Rebel XT, which I later upgraded to a 40D (have a 7D now). The 40D offers numerous improvements, and is well worth the upgrade, IMO -- especially at its current used price.

The ergonomics are a huge improvement, and you will get a little better high ISO performance. If you shoot action, the higher fps will be a big plus, too.

I went from an XSi to the 40D. I also have large hands and the 40D fits my hands so much better. Also like the top lcd and faster fps. Really like the control layout compared to the XSi. It will be worthwhile upgrade, you will not be disappointed!

If you want a camera that feels more "significant", then the 40d is great. I also much prefer the dual dials on the 40d as compared to the rebel series.

In short, get the 40d. There are probably plenty of nice used ones for sale on this forum.
