The Sigma feels like it is built better to me, is sharper at 1.4, and I like the bokeh a lot better. You may have to go through a few to get one that focuses well, or just adjust it with your body. My first one last fall was all over the place on my camera, so I switched to the Canon 50. After a few months, I gradually got the itch to give the Sigma another try and just buy new this time so I could get a free calibration if necessary. Second time around, it's perfect. I had to MA it to +20, but on my 5D2, after a few thousand photos, I'd say the focus is accurate 99% of the time - and that 1% is probably just some user error. The bokeh is just amazing, it's a bit sharper, and the build quality isn't even close. I couldn't be happier with my decision, but just know there is some inherent risk if you choose the Sigma.

It does front focus slightly when I tested it, but in actual use I didnt notice it (user error at f/1.4 is more likely than lens error in my case). I liked my Canon 50 but it just wasn't sharp at 1.4 to 2.0, I know you get what you pay for, but if your advertising it at 1.4 then it should shoot at 1.4 . I say go Sigma

IMO, the Sigma is better built, faster, and the new matted finish looks and feels great. However, like what most people already know, or will find out the hard way is that, with Sigma it's a hit or miss. It's literally like playing the lottery. If you get a good copy, it's wonderful piece of glass. If you don't and your body does not support micro adjust, you'll have to send it in for calibration and hope they don't give you the runaround. If your not the original owner of the lens, and it also happens to be under warranty, then you will get the runaround cause they will only ship the lens back to the original purchaser of the lens. That being said, good luck. Canon 5D MK III

It would still be sharp - but it may not focus accurately/consistently. When I first bought one last fall, I got it used on POTN. The guy I bought it from said it worked great on his 5D2 - but when I got it, it was horrific on my 7D. Whenever I eventually sold it to a friend, it worked great on his old 5D. So it's really just a tossup. Even my new one doesn't work perfectly on the 7D, but I don't really care, as it IS perfect on my 5D2.

As others have said solid build, BIG and beautiful bokeh. With a body that has MFA its a much better built lens than the Canon. The Canon performs well but not as sharp as the Sigma or as nice on the bokeh. On a budget the Canon is still a fine lens, if you can afford the Sigma its worth playing the focus lottery.
