Let me preface this by saying I think for the most part the 5d mark ii is a fine camera. I know its the camera of choice for many pro wedding photogs, but I have never loved it.

The shutter on my beloved 1d mark ii is on its way out. I have been thinking about an upgrade for a while, and now I have no choice. I was saving for a 1ds mark iii, cannot make that purchase at this time.

The likely candidates are the 1ds mark ii, the 1d mark iii, and the 5d mark ii. Let me start with what I dont like about the 1d mark ii
- Low resolution
-Tiny screen
-Old tech does not always play well with my iMac
-Not much ISO range

I really like the 1ds mark ii, but I really am getting to the point where I cannot stand the tiny low res screen.

The 1d mark iii has a much improved screen, but not much boost in resolution.

The 5d mark ii addresses all of the problems from the 1d mark ii. I will be giving up a fair amount in the process however.
-The build quality of a 1d series
-The very nice AF system
-Dual card slots
-Less powerful batteries means less power to the lens means even slower AF
-Size/weight/second shutter of the 1d. I know some people hate it, but I quite like it

I dont have the FF fever. I dont want another APS-C sensor.

My next wedding (Thats what I shoot BTW) is in 10 days. I have back ups of course (50d x2) but I dont want to shoot the entire wedding with my backups.

I feel like I am missing something in my breakdowns. Maybe there is another camera I have not considered. Any suggestions?

Sounds like the 1d3 should be your choice? What difference does the resolution of the 1d3 make if you were so satisfied with the 1d2 anyway?

EDIT: Nevermind - just saw you dont like the resolution of the 1d2

1Ds Mk 2 / 5D Mk 3 | 17-40L | 24-105L | 35L | 50/1.4 | 85/1.8 | 100L | 70-200L Mk 2 | 580 EXII x 2
GH2 | 14-140 | 20/1.7

The low resolution was something I wasnt happy with. If I am going to be spending upwards of $2000 then I want more resolution.

Edit- Just saw your edit. LOL.

That's not a factor unless you're shooting very large super telephoto lenses.

You've pretty much covered all possibilities already. Either go with the 1D3 and sacrifice resolution, or go with the 5D2 and sacrifice AF & Dual Card slots. It doesn't get any simpler than that. :D

Speaking from experience I say go with the 1DMKIII. I have shot extensively with the 1DSMKIII, 1DMKIII, 1DMKII, and the 5DMKII. While the 5DMKII does have more resolution than the 1DMKIII, the 1DMKIII is a way better camera in terms of af accuracy, af speed, ergonomics, and durability.
