Sorry for soo many threads regarding the 60D lately, I'm just preparing for when I get mine soon. What is a good spare battery to get, other then the expensive Canon brand one. Basically what aftermarket batteries are ok to buy?

I know some of the off brands are absolute crap, so I'm looking for advice on what brands are good to buy

I use a MaxTek LP-E6 I got from amazon.com. It was about $15 and works as well as the Canon battery.

I picked up a Wasabi on Amazon from recommendations here on POTN. Works fine. No problems.

Quick question. Do all the above-mentioned 3rd party batteries work with the Canon charger?

Yes, the Maxtek does. It also is chip-readable by the 60D as to battery life, shutter count and recharge performance.

I bought a Sterling Tek for my T1i, and it did not hold a charge as well as the OEM battery. I ended up buying another Canon. Lesson learned. Now I have two Canon batteries for my 60D (the dealer threw in the second one when I traded my T1i with an extra battery).

That said, to Shutterwolf: The LP-E6 battery for the 60D is typically good for 1000 or more shots, so don't rush in if you don't have to. It has a much longer life than the Rebel batteries.

I bought the Wasabi LPE6 based on user reviews on Amazon. Many 3rd party batteries have bad reviews there, including SterlingTek, IIRC. Wasabi works fine so far.

Poor reviews aside... I've had very good luck with SterlingTek batteries.... I bought another brand on Amazon for my G12 and both died in about 6 months... the SterlingTek batteries took more photos than the original OEM battery and have kept doing that for about a year now.

I bought two SterlingTeks for my new 60D.

I'm considering trying this one... not going to expect top notch quality, but I really like the assurance of always having a battery. The kind of stuff I do for fun around here, I never know when I'm going to need to grab my camera. It could very especially happen when the battery is on the charger, and the camera is temporarily useless. We have several dogs around here, so with my luck, I would be charging the camera, and they would start doing something picture worthy and I would be S.O.L. Eventually, I will get a Canon spare, but till then, an aftermarket should give me at least a descent backup.

That, or maybe I will get lucky and find a used 60D here with 2 batteries in my price range when i get my money.

For $639 pre-tax, why not just go with the refurbished 60D from Canon direct? Also, if you can order a refurbished lens with it for 20% if you are in the market for one.

I picked up a brand new canon battery on ebay for $37/free shipping right after I got my Meike battery grip. With two Canon batteries in that grip I can go a week or more and not dip below 50% on either battery if I'm not putting in 7-800 shot sessions for work.

Well with my local tax and shipping, it will be just over 700. Plus I gotta buy a camera to use for CLP which is another 10-15 bucks. I saw a 60D go on here for 650 shipped with a spare battery. Hopefully I can find a deal like that again, otherwise yes, I do plan on using the CLP.

If you are getting a 60D through the CLP, ask about them providing a spare battery for a nominal fee. Never hurts to ask...
