Hi guys!

So, my beloved 17-55 has been acting up recently :( The IS is on it's way out - sometimes when I focus it gets all shaky and makes funny noises before it finally focuses. I can't say I'm surprised though - I bought the lens used and worked the crap out of it.

So, my question. The lens is in fairly good shape besides that - minor scratches on the lens body (lens body? just the outside part) and I think it's pretty sharp. However, I've been planning to upgrade to a 5D2 or 5D3 with a 50mm f/1.4, so now the dilemma is - should I sell the lens as it is or get it fixed first? The IS dying out is just a gradual thing - it's not like the lens is unusable right now. Would the value significantly drop if I didn't send it off before selling, or would it be worth a bit more if I had it serviced then sold?

Thanks in advance!!

It would be nice to get it fixed before selling it.

However, that would eat into your profit as opposed to just selling it at a lower price with the buyer knowing whats wrong with it so it would be up to them as to whether or not to get it fixed.

While I don't know the exact price I've heard it's not really that expensive to get the IS replaced. It would certainly make it easier to sell, but I would at least call Canon and see how much the repair would be.

Edit... Found this link from 2008 about repair costs for the IS repair on a 17-55

Ohh ... so I could ask them what they would prefer? You think that selling it just for a lower price would have me lose a bit less money than having it fixed then sold? Either way, seems like I am going to lose out on some money. Blah! Guess that's the way it works out in this industry ;)

That's great! I can manage 100 bucks! Hopefully it stays close to that amount!

I would sell it as is and just document all the issues. Who knows..there may be someone that can repair it themself.
