I switched to iMac in January of 2011 and I don’t regret a bit. If you have the money, go for it. It’s all about price for most people. But if you’re comparing same performance of each, Apple products are built much better and have the best quality stuff.

These days Apple products generally use the same stuff that is in a PC - same processor, memory, graphics cards etc.

The iMAC does have a nice form factor in that it is pleasant to look at on a desk but the all-in-one nature of the unit brings many shorcomings - not least a general lack of expandability, limitations on cooling prohibiting overclocking (even if Apple would let you at the BIOS) and the use of mobile (laptop) graphics cards.

I too have a hackintosh with 12G memory running at 4.2GHZ but 99% of the time I boot up into Windows 7 because it can do everything that I want with the exception of running the Apple Developer Apps.

At the end of the day - if you like and want an iMAC and can live with the limitations then buy one - it is, by far, the best All-in-one solution on the market.

It is not however the best computer on the market by any stretch of the imagination.

Funny... back when I was deciding on a new computer, a custom PC with 12GB ram, 4.xGhz cpu, fast gfx card, and so on, was one of my considerations. I could have had something that was either same stuff but cheaper, or much faster but same price, but either way, building a PC from scratch and ordering the components I wanted would have taken a couple weeks to ship everything and then put it all together, or I could've had an iMac ordered in 2 days and I'd be up and running in no time.

If you have the money, go for it. It’s all about price for most people.

Could be it... Every print house I've been to had top of the line Macs, and asking about price I'd get replies along the lines of "who cares if it pays for itself?"

The people who complain about price are hobbyists who have the free time to build/choose their own computers, and not working professionals for whom a $3000 mac pro will quickly buy itself back in the first month of business. People will probably say stuff like "You could've used the money you saved to buy other things like lenses", but IMO, reasoning that money you save could go for a different purchase is a fairly retarded train of thought. Buy what you need; when you need it.

Obviously, the only people who buy macs are hipster who think it's cool, LOL

I'm gonna go enjoy my free iMac now.

I acquired an expensive camera so I can hang out in forums, annoy wedding photographers during formals and look down on P&S users... all the while telling people it's the photographer, not the camera.

Thankfully for me I live within easy travelling of two of the most competitive PC shops in the UK so delays for mail order were not a consideration.

I can understand the mentality of "if it pays for itself, who cares" as I share the same opinion when it ones to photography kit.

With a computer though I am yet to quantify why some businesses MUST have Mac as I am not aware of anything software wise for Mac that is not available for a PC (except of course the developer apps that I previously mentioned).

I won't knock Mac but I can't accept that they are essential to any business.

Aperture, Final Cut, Pixelmator, iLife, iWork. I'm sure there are a few others.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I switched to Apple back in 07 and consider it to be one of the greatest technological moves I have made in my life. Before the Mac I was into PC's, I even built my own pc. What I got really tired of was restoring every 6 months, viruses, the horrible random registry errors associated with windows, how you have to sometimes download and install 10 different things to update and the computer slowing down almost on a monthly schedule. When I switched to MAC it was a breath of fresh air, everything worked and still works perfectly today. The graphic interface and software integration is great.

Don't take advise from pc or macheads that have not been on both sides of the fence.

Buy a Mac

Funny how I manage to make it years without reloading Windows. I actually only reload when I build a new machine or upgrade to a new version of Windows. I've never had a virus. And Apple never pushes massive updates? I've pulled new macs out of the box that immediately wanted 2+ GB of updates.

Computers are just a tool and they get replaced / outdated so rapidly. I say buy low-price high-specs (ie. a Windows PC) because you're going to replace it or upgrade it in a few years anyway.

Agree!
Same with phones: iOS, Android, Windows or whatever.
Buy what makes you happy and not the neighbor.
Even cars...and the list goes on :)
