Sort of ground level to 1.5ft extent?

Any recommendations please?

TIA Dave

Really Right Stuff has a very small/strong tripod for close to the ground work (aluminum). I don't have it but it fits the bill for what you're looking for. If I recall it's about $350.

I bought the "Vanguard Alta Pro 253CT Carbon Fiber Tripod with SBH-50 Ball Head"; very pleased with its performance.

Will run you $300 + USD

I use Berlebach mini with a RRS BH40 ballhead on top of it. And when needed, a focusing rail from an old Vivitar bellows.

You can look into the Kirk "Mighty Low Boy", which lays essentially flat; http://www.kirkphoto.com/Mighty-Low-Boy.html (external link)
They also have the "Low Pod": http://www.kirkphoto.com/Low-Pod.html (external link)

There really is just ONE tripod that does the REAL business

Unilok, though it is more a pro tripod BUILT for extreme work, mine will NEVER be parted with

Finally one of my most used pieces of equipment but NOT cheap is the manfrotto 709B DIGI, which I use with my 60D and 100mm canon macro

I have also just bought this, and it is a superb mount, lighter version also available

That looks about right... but having a 'normal' tripod, I'm not rich enough / prepared to pay $300 + for a second one peeps!

12" off the ground is workable. Such a faff inverting the head on my normal
tripod and working 'up side down'.

But not what I'm looking for.
Thanks for the reply.

SLR Zoom (external link) seems right,
<3kg, ball head (included?).

Thanks for that.

No problems with quality?

I've had it only for around 2 months, and no quality issues so far. With heavy set up (like my Canon 40D + 24-70mm + flash), the legs can sag depending on the "leg positioning." The legs are quite flexible so you can position the legs any way you want. I got mine to primarily use it for macro as well as light traveling where I don't want to carry a full size tripod.
