I would love to see the folks here who can understand how to apply the AF system in this new camera in a way that it could be understood by a guy like me.
You almost need a PHD to get through the manual.
LOL

Maybe finding some tutorials or real world examples of how to set the right AF setting in a way that is easy to understand.
Anyone else looking for help on using the AF on this camera.

I have to admit that I am struggling trying to understand how to translate the info in the manual to actual usage.
But then, I don't have near the experience that many have.

You have to start at the beginning. Use the basic options first and become familiar with them. Slowly you will expand your needs and experiment with other options. There is no one right way to use it.

Here are two webpages that do a much better job explaining the AF system than the manual could:

Thank you.
Thats a great start.

I'm sure as folks get more comfortable using different methods they will share some tips.

Does the 1d iv have a similar AF or is this way more advanced?

Karl,

I am not sure of where you are at in regards to using a DSLR's AF system, but perhaps viewing Canon produced tutorials on the 7D may be a place to start.

I own both a 7D and a 5D Mk III, and perhaps these videos may help you achieve a breakthrough with your 5D3. Most of the info presented here is very translatable to the 5D3:

I ordered the book 'Canon 5D Mark III Experience - The Still Photography Guide to Operation and Image Creation with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III'

I got my copy electronically via .PDF file and made a hard copy for use at home.

Do you have a link (Amazon?).
I'm sure David Busch's book won't be out for a while.

remember that manuals try to describe something...not how you use it in the real world. You car's manual teaches what the car functions/features are, not how to drive. So you need a "how to use this stuff" manual. You can some good 5dIII videos on YouTube.

Here's the BIF link...Would be nice if we had a thread that everyday shooters could share pics and what worked for them in certain situations. This thing is soooo good, I really intend on getting it dialed.

Here is a shot I took with case #2 with AF expansion 4 point (left, right, up, down) I took about 100 and very few were OOF. I think it was because the lighting sucked so bad and lacked real good contrast.

Thank you.
What do you think of the book?

I'm learning settings a lot faster than I would normally.

While the internet provides a ton of resources like the link below, I found the book to be good because it provides context behind the settings. Granted, my knowledge level for cameras is amateur, I see potential in my capabilities.

I'm only through the first 3 chapters, and chapter 4 starts in details about the AF system, but the last three days of shooting have been on the order of horrible, ok, to getting better (in that order)

I'm normally good at picking things up, but that's because I lean on my own understanding. Well, this book let's me take a back seat and puts me in a classroom setting where I can just learn.

I'm no longer tinkering around and can now aim to produce the images that I want and expect.

I ordered and downloaded the book.
It looks like it's just what I need.
Amazon gives it great reviews.

Thanks
