most definitely. Expose for BG, use fill flash to light up subject. Also looks like you used evaluate metering on both because neither backgrounds are overly blown out. Shooting at the beach is always trial and error in getting flash levels correctly balanced with BG ambient light. Just takes practice and patience.

well i just had to go look at the exif.. i only use spot meter...
and it is showing there too.. phew...

what i was told (taking a landscape class) is that if you can expose for the blue sky do it.. not straight up and not at horizon.. believe that is what i did there... this was a quick impromptu shot.. so didnt have my flash with me... but it has me thinking for next time...

Might be easiest to just add fill light in post.

I know where you got the tshirts .... ;) Cause my younger son has the same that your boys are wearing!

Great shot, I have a hard time at the beach too. The second shot looks like the waves are in focus and not the kid??

Fill flash at a sunny beach is almost always a good idea.
