I know it's normal for the IS to make noise, but my lens never used to make this noise and i'm wondering if anyone here possibly knows if I should send it out for repair/what might be wrong? It's way out of warranty, I got it back in 2008, but I have just about a month before I need it for an event and want to get it fixed asap if it needs it. But I don't want to send it out if this noise is normal and it's just become noisier as it's gotten older (if that's possible? lol)

I took a short video of it so you can hear what it sounds like..it's kind of like a buzzing noise. It only does it when i'm shooting in IS mode. When i switch it to IS, or turn the camera on it makes the noise. Also when i focus.

thanks in advance!

Woah, that doesn’t sound good lol.
I have a 70-200 IS II and I don’t know if the F4 IS noise is the same or not. But as far as I can tell, it doesn’t sound good...

This lens has the noisiest AF of any lens I've come across. I posted a similar question when I first got the lens and was told it was normal.
However, if it's the squeak you talking about, that's weird.

Well, there’s one thing you can do. Sell it and get a 70-200 IS II :D best lens I ever had/used.

yeah i'm talking about that weird squeaky noise at the beginning. i would love to sell and upgrade but i'm on a tight budget right now so unfort i can't! I want to eventually upgrade to the 2.8.

thanks for the help, guess I'll be sending it out for repair on monday. Hopefully it won't cost an arm and a leg, lol

The grinding sound is actually normal. That lens has such a loud and crappy sounding IS system. It works damn good though. That beeping sound upon starting and stopping the IS system is definitely not right. Canon will get you straightened out though. Good luck w everything. Let us know what the problem was. That's kind of weird to just happen out of nowhere. Did you drop it or anything?

If the lens is working perfectly, I would continue using it as it is. It could take years before something fails.

Until you trust it again, you might just want to rent another lens for your event, just in case.

(I really need to update my signature)

it's been happening for a little while now but I've got some events coming up that I really need it for and was concerned that maybe a part was going & didn't want it to give out on me. i do remember accidentally dropping it one day but it was on a carpeted floor and it wasn't from high up, it was in my bedroom. guess that could be enough to startle something inside it though... i mostly just use it for hobby photography but my friend and i now run a music website & we've been getting into some events. before if something failed it wouldn't be an issue bc i could just send it out for repair but now that i've got actual events i need it for it could be a big issue!

Did you ever get this issue resolved? My friend is having similar problem with his 70-200 f4 IS lens.
